Many homeless people prefer to maintain dogs despite suffering criticism, and while this is undeniable, there may be cause for concern when a homeless person puts their animal in danger. This is frequently not the case, though, as many homeless individuals forego their own necessities in order to give their dogs food, shelter, and warmth.

Houston resident Wilma Frice was brought to tears when she saw Patrick, a homeless man, outside a Walmart holding a sign that read, “Dog in the pound, need help.” Patrick wasn’t looking for help for himself, but for Franklin, his beloved pet who was stuck in the pound because Patrick couldn’t afford the $120 to get him out.

The woman told PEOPLE.com that the man “seemed like a nice, gentle soul who just happened to have a hard life.” He appeared to be a huge boy who had just lost his puppy because of the desperate look in his eyes.

The generous woman then posted the touching tale on Facebook! She wrote on her post, “I’m just so shocked he is a beautiful man and Franklin is a wonderful puppy. We might all find ourselves in his circumstance in the blink of an eye, and you never know someone’s condition or what’s going on in their life so I am not a very judgmental person, so I did this because I would want someone to do it for me. I’ve worked with homeless animals throughout my life and dedicated my life to them.

I believe you should always pay it forward if you can because, as I said, you never know what someone has gone through. I know how hard I work every day to make sure the animals have everything they need and won’t end up on the street again while they wait for their forever homes, and I have been fortunate in my life. I never judge anyone by the cover of their book because, until you walk in their shoes, you have no idea what someone has gone through.
